A new King's Field for me! (An Additional II journal) |
Lead | |
|
I might be a little behind the times, but I ordered King's Field Additional 2 for the PSP. I've never played the game before, and while I've heard
a lot of opinions about it, I'll soon find out for myself what its about.... I'll post on this thread first and lasting impressions of the game when
I get it in the mail. (Could quite possibly be this upcoming week)
EDIT: I would like to point out that I'm a little confused there are no FAQs or Reviews about the game. I had a terrible enough time finding about what other people thought about the game. Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

Finally! I got my copy of King's Field Additional II in the mail today.
"Acceptable" condition from e-bay really is acceptable! I have yet to play the game yet, (I'm still at work) but I'll put some thoughts together, probably after I have some time with the game this weekend. Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

The beginning of my KF Additional Journal
|
I think I accidentally exited out of the game about 4 times feeling me way around the menus (trying to figure out how to save).
^_^ O confirms and X cancels in pretty much all the menus. The game starts at a main map where there's an inn, blacksmith, shop, pub and dungeon for the selections. Loading screens are silly... (they're only there for two seconds!) Ok, I've put about an hour in to the game. It took me a few minutes to get the battle system figured out. Monsters blink right before they attack - X to raise the shield. Wolves, Slimes & 1 Reaper is what I've run into for my enemies. Triangle is the sword, which can be used at any time - probably to discover hidden walls and bust open crates. I haven't figured out magic yet.... then again I don't think I have any spells, as at Level 2, my character has 6 magic points. According to the shop when I tried to sell something, I have a (extra) shield? I have yet to figure out how to equip it. I've repaired my sword once. That's about it for the immediate random thoughts. Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

Well, I know how to equip things - its a little hard telling what I'm equipping because its pretty text only in the "camp" menu. Its ok though
because I equip by numbers. I'm looking forward to finding my first spell!
I found out that monsters can block too and blink a subtle burnt blue when they do. I figured that out encountering skeletons, and I knew why it took me forever to kill reapers sometimes. Blinking monsters means blocking monsters. I more or less don't know what I pick up out of crates because that's text only too. I think I know how to use herbs? (but I'm not positive) In the Equip screen, the "L" button acts like the Select button in the older games. I think I'm putting herbs in that slot. (I'm putting something in the slot that heals me 30HP) Herbs are EXPENSIVE! 80G a pop! I feel like strangling that shop keeper. Pressing start, it shows controls. I'm still not sure what square is used for. I'm thinking magic.... I also found a map which seems to act as the pixie map - it shows the layout of everywhere I go. (even though I can't understand people, they're still very giving and it definitely pays to talk to them.) Well, I'm at Level 4, got leather armor, leather helmet, a decent buckler type shield and my starting sword. Traps are RUTHLESS! Monsters don't give me anywhere near the trouble that traps do. Speaking of traps, found a place early in the game where I fell through the floor to my death. I feel like I'm playing a King's Field game. It pays to use the shield. I definitely can't afford to trade hits in this dungeon, even with armor on. I can handle skeletons now, but I had a spider send me to my grave. (heh, when he jumped up and went off the screen, I thought he fled.... nope, got the ninja drop on me. Not next time though.) Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

King's Field Additional II journal continues

Well, I think I pretty much figured out what the first menu selection is on the "camp" screen. It looks to be a treasures collected. I got a spell
crystal, a heal all jug of something, and an axe. All three things were in that menu - I'm guessing they were from treasures picked up. I'm thinking
within that first menu there's an option to drop items? I had things disappear from my inventory upon flailing about that there circle button.
Square is definitely for offensive spells. That nice little fireball spell is hell on those ninja spiders. (Those spiders are definitely the nastiest baddy I've encountered so far.) This game is really growing on me! I'm not sure if I'm stuck or not - I'm still feeling out the area, (those spiders are no joke!) but I've ran into a couple locked doors in this area I'm in. I had a rather strange "cut scene" with one soldier standing by himself in a corner. I talked to him to get a bunch of symbols. Talked to him again, got a loading screen. A picture of him shaking with some dust falling, more symbols, loading screen..... (have I mentioned the loading screens are silly?) Some old man on a lower dungeon level gave me something, but I'm not sure what. I'm not sure if I'm already using it or if I haven't found it in the menus yet. I think I'm going to try this axe out on some of these suspicious looking walls. My dagger against them just made a clicking noise. I've found one hidden door. It wasn't that hard to spot with the suspicious map layout and a lonely corner. That hidden door was for a shortcut to the next area. Hopefully not all the doors are for shortcuts. Well, I'm at Level 6 with an axe and a complete leather getup, things are going well. I've had better luck finding herbs than buying them. Hopefully there's another shop around here - he only has about 6-7 herbs left to sell me. There are still a couple menus I haven't quite figured out yet.... Things are going well for me in this game! It looks like the language barrier isn't stunting my progress through the game. Actually, it provides an
additional challenge..... and since I never really cared too much about the story in the first place, I wouldn't call it a negative!
The axe was definitely what the doctor ordered for breaking certain walls. I discovered a golden plant which I'm not sure what it was, but I picked it up. I also discovered what appeared to be a painting of an eye on a wall. Hitting it opened the eye, hitting it again opened it wide. Weird. I've been exploring this 2nd area as thoroughly as possible. I should have learned from the first time I fell to my death that I shouldn't mindlessly hit the up arrow through the dungeon. Shame on me for that one. Tapping the down arrow does an about face - threw me off for a second until I realized all I did was turn around. I've figured out a few more hidden doors, but no real treasures within them. Got shot a few times by arrow traps. I still hate traps. The shopkeeper must get new supplies based on my progress through the game. He went from having a handful of herbs to almost 30, not to mention lots of additional armors, weapons and other supplies. I have a stone that looks a lot like the weapon improving stones on KF:TAC. I can't seem to give it to the blacksmith to improve my weapon. I'm wondering if its used to repair a weapon while in the dungeon. I'm glad in a way that I can't hold more than 9 of one item. Adds a little realism and challenge.... (I'm thinking in regards to herbs or antidotes) I've got a dragon crystal! I'm really REALLY tempted to sell it - 5600G is a lot of money. I'll just keep it for now. I got stuck for a minute in the other area, but discovered a grid that has a series of "glowing doors" representing gates throughout this area. I accidentally figured out that there is only enough power to operate only a handful of gate switches. Closing gates (turning off their switch) behind areas I've already explored has allowed me to explore other areas. I got my hands on a boy-without-a-father sword. (judging from the picture of it in the blacksmith's shop - looks like the same swords from Shadow Tower) I managed to get a dagger with elemental strike power, but I sold it. I hope I won't regret it - worse case scenario, I'll end up buying it back. I had a mysterious phenomena happen. Every time I turned or took a step, my health dropped one point! I wasn't poisoned, I thought it was my newest sword I gathered.... turned out, by the time I made it to the shop (so I could see what I had), I'd acquired what looked like bone arms - like the bone gauntlets from TAC. Health still drained from me even without a weapon (so much for them being like TAC's Bone Arms) but they fetched a nice price in the shop. There's creepy looking "bone armor" in the shop - I'm wondering if all the pieces together would make sort of an ancient set. That would be cool. I've ran into these "wall scorpion" creatures as well as ghosts that use magic. My equipment isn't really magic-proof.... so back to the shop it is. Currently at Level 8 with leather armor and gloves, iron helmet, and these shinguards which are quite magic resistant. (Now its time to go play with some ghosts!) I still have the fireball spell. I wouldn't mind finding some heal magic. I'm liking this game enough, I'm seriously contemplating buying Additional I. (this wouldn't be the first time I've gone through a series backwards) Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

Wow. Discovered the mother of all hidden doors (not to far from the entrance) which leads to a really tough area and a boss which handed my butt to me.
(I'm betting it was a boss because of the cutscene before fighting this rather large monster) I'll work on that area later.
I figured out what those notches above the life bar are for - they display status effects. So far poison and one other one that acts like silence and curse together are the only ones I've run into. Either my timing was just right, or antidotes cure other things besides poison. I've found its a pretty good idea to have multiple weapons. For the most part, low durability is what's sent me reeling back to the surface, to town. I'm wondering if there are items or ways to get back to the surface quickly.... Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

Heh, how the tables have turned! I handed that bosses butt to him! Turns out, that hidden door was a pretty big shortcut to another area much later in the
game. I guess getting hurt 40HP is worth the taking a 5 minute route in 5 seconds.
I have a earth heal type spell, and a water based "dispoison" type spell. Cool! I'm glad the passive magic can be used at any time. Now at level 13 I've got some nice metal armor, gloves and helm, tower shield, a great sword, boy-without-a-father sword, axe, a wicked looking bow.... I've reached another area where my map doesn't apply to. Looks like I'll have to find another map. There are zombies, mummies, bats and these pig knights around here. I can handle them for a while, especially with a heal spell, but either low weapon durability or low magic sends me sprinting back to the surface. There was in the market, normall a fat kid eating something, and a fat little girl holding a really big cat..... but the last time I was there, there was a guy with an eye patch wanting 3000G. My curiosity got the better of me, I sold my dragon crystal.... and gave him the money. I got the "item received" noise.... he said a few things and wanted 3000G more. I gave it too him, he gave me something, and took off. I couldn't find anything new in my inventory. I hope I didn't buy information - which with the language barrier is completely useless. I'm hoping it was a map or a key or something. I have a feeling I might never know unless I find a FAQ or go through the game again without buying it and only then finding out it was something I needed. The music is AWESOME throughout the game, except at the gambling table. That music made me want to hurl. Seriously, its that bad. Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

Well, that thief guy I gave 6000G to didn't give me a map to this other area. I'll probably never know what that was for. A guy at the pub gave me a
crystal flask - I'm not sure where to fill it up.
I ended up selling my great sword. Seriously, that thing was made of cardboard. It always broke in 20 swings. Curiosity poisoned the cat. Stuck my face in a well, got a face full of poison. I've got a really high end powerful axe that has excellent durability and I am able to smoke every monster in the first several areas with one hit. Some critical hits are over 300. I'm at level 20 with some improved equipment compared to the last post with a full inventory and 5 grand in my pocket. I figured out how to use the passive spells in-game without equipping them. Very nice. Occasionally, I thumb through the few menus I don't know what they're for to see if I can figure something out. I really wish I could find the map to this other area I'm exploring. Looks like I'm going to have to scout for some hidden walls. I hope the map to this floor isn't to this one area - where these rather frightening armored undead beast men are. Having 200 HPs, using the shield and magic/attack combos, I can barely take out one before I almost die. Sometimes I still die.... Runs Aways froms zee Kraken!!
|
Thanks to a work related camping trip (YAY!), apart from mingling with a lot of different people, I got to put some decent time into King's Field
Additional II.
Currently my character is at level 32, with some really decent equipment! I had to pass up on an uber shield because of a darkness status effect to it, but thank goodness cursed stuff fetches a decent price at the shop. I had an earth based sword that pallet swaps that black scar fire sword from TAC, I have a lethal type rapier with water powers, a two handed axe with GREAT striking power, and a very strong warrior's bow. Most of my armor is of the plate variety, except boots - I'm wearing the same magical projection boots for additional resistance that I've been wearing for a while. I've run into a series of bosses, a few I've beat, a few I haven't. I've beat this very large Kraken - it took 9 healing potions during the fight to survive long enough to kill it, but I thought it was pretty cool how, just like King's Field I US, the "head" shrunk and disappeared after so many hit points off the sea monster. An old guy right before fighting the Kraken gave me the map to the "2nd area" I've been looking for. The same area as the Kraken, but on a different location of the map (the area's huge by the way) I examined some "green shield" which activated a fight with a "minotaur" type boss. It was as strong as the Kraken, but no where near as many hit points. I took it out with the bow, which was EXTREMELY awkward - if I would have known it ahead of time, I would have brought a shield to the fight and saved myself a herbal liquid or two. (blocking with my arm is better than not blocking, but its only better than that) To my knowledge, I can't switch weapons once a fight has started. I've run into two different skeleton bosses with cattle-ish skull heads, both engulfed in flames/magic - one a master swordsman, the other a floating mage. I can't beat either one (9 herbal liquids isn't enough to live through it). The skeleton mage was using very strong dark based magic. I found a termite's nest, and the huge queen termite thrashed me but good. I might have over 300HP at my current level, but even blocking with my best shield, I take 150-170 damage per attack from her. I don't live long during that fight.... Along the way, I've figured out how to flee battles - how to use any magic during a fight, in the menus - that there are fake traps. (looking like holes or cracked floors, but can be walked over normally) I ran into a predicament for a minute there. Not only is there a limit for the number of items you can carry, but there's also a limit to how much you can carry period. I couldn't switch out equipment because of the two hand vs. one hand / shield equation and having too much stuff and no where else for the switched to go. Selling extra stuff solved the problem - so much for me being a collector in this game. I gathered two spells in a cathedral type area really close to each other, but I'm not sure what they do. One is featured on the back of the game box, an earth based spell. The other is a water based spell - they don't attack and they don't heal. I believe they might be element resistance spells. I definitely don't know Japanese, but after the colon for the attack spells it will have some symbols and some numbers. Heal spell, HP then numbers. Since there's just one symbol, an elemental one, I believe it might be for defense. I have 5 spells total, 4 of which are defensive or passive. I haven't found any other attack spells than this fireball - which is a little odd in my book. Oh well, I'll keep looking. Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

Sure enough, 5 minutes of playing after I mention I can't find any other attack spells, I find a very powerful one. Its a flash type spell which is quite
destructive - and was just what the doctor ordered for that skeleton swordsman. That boss dropped a very powerful wind based one handed (thank God!) katana.
I've also got a two handed axe that strongly resembles the Morguline Axe from King's Field II US - VERY powerful.
My exploration is going well! ....and I'm at Level 34. ....next I'm going to try to take out that mage-ish skeleton with my new found weapons after work, gym and meeting today. Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

Whoops. I guess its been too long since I've played TAC to remember what the Black Scar looks like. Well, I think I more or less found the Black Scar -
and its a powerful sword with a fire based attack. I'm wondering if there are sword spells in this game? I haven't tried them yet. The other earth
sword is orange and looks pretty wicked.... it looks more like a sword version of the Fire Carver though.
That mage skeleton was quite a fight, but I prevailed! I've gained a few levels as well as different equipment/spells since I last fought that termite queen - that will be the only boss I've found so far that I couldn't beat. I won't say that I don't have anywhere else to go, that I'm stuck (since there's quite a bit of this termite nest I haven't explored) but it doesn't look like I'm able to go much further in this watery catacomb. There's quite a bit of the map left that I can't get to, and I currently don't know how to get there. Only time will tell. With a full inventory, 14,000G in my pocket, and a few areas yet to explore, I think as far as going through this game, everything is going to be alright! Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

Actually several levels up was the key to me making short work of that termite queen. (and my light based attack spell helped too - and by short work, I mean
I used one herbal liquid before she was toast.)
Defeating her landed me a potent earth based attack spell. Well, it looks like I've beat all the bosses in the areas I've found.... The nest is fairly barren. There is a couple treasure chests, but other than that, its dead ends and a maze. Actually, the ironic part of it is that the termites nest is the key to me accessing the part of the watery catacombs that I couldn't reach! The plot thickens! I'm currently trudging the road to happy destiny at Level 37.... Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

An ever thickening plot

When I went into the dungeon for the first time, there was a short man with a massive beard, and one eye talking as I went in.
Naturally, I don't know anything he said. As I progressed through the game, he appeared in the market place. He has been there ever since, but I still don't know what he's saying. The watery catacombs ended up taking me deeper in this cathedral area, and I ran into an interesting cut scene. There was a king there (judging from the crown on his head) and he said quite a bit, then a large dragon appeared, breathed flames which created a fire-wall blocking me from going any further. The one eyed man appeared again and talked to me. I'm not familiar enough with the story, and my last save, I was on my way back to town.... my mission is to talk to everyone to see if anything is different. That won't happen until after work today. Anyway, needless to say I'm pleased enough with Additional II that I ordered Additional I today. I probably won't tackle that game until I go through this one, but to say the least, despite the differences, I really like the direction the series went! Feels like a King's Field game to me! Its got that hook! Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

CRAP! I knew this would happen sooner or later. I'm officially stuck. It looks like the area I'm to go to next is blocked by a big wall of fire -
from that king and dragon.
Am I giving up? Certainly not! I found a few other things, explored what I could.... There are a few things I'm not sure of. I found a room that looks like a boiler room. Not sure what to do there, but I have a feeling it has to do with the watery catacombs which I've spent WAY to much time in. That one eye bearded midget it no where to be found. Hmmmm..... There's one treasure chest across a pit that I can't seem to get to. I don't think its absolutely vital I get to it - I'm fairly certain its some armor or generic item. I'm at level 42 and monsters definitely aren't the problem; its where to go next that is the problem. It sounds tedious, but I think I'll be talking to everyone again, to see if they say something different. (UGH), but that's kind of how I found that 2nd map. I haven't tried to kill people yet, but I don't think it will be the best idea in the world. I did figure out sword magic. Equipping the sword adds its spell into the menu. YAY!!!! ^_^ The Black Scar (fire) and Shiden (wind) seem to be the only magical weapons I have. My earth sword I've sold already (it wasn't that strong) and I'm about to sell my water rapier, which doesn't have a spell and is weaker than my other weapons.... I tried to cheat and find an FAQ but there are none. I can't even find any in Japanese. Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

HEHE!! I wasn't stuck for long!
I'm not sure if it was the puzzle I just solved, (which wouldn't make a lot of sense) a level cap (was level 43 when I made it back to the wall of flames and they weren't there) or just a general time limit..... either way, the flames weren't there anymore, and there was another cut scene and boss fight. I'm wondering if this old one eyed bearded guy is an enemy? Talking to him, he had that dragon and a soldier laying on the ground behind him. I don't know what's going on. The fight with that dragon was a tad sad. For being able to spout flames that blocked my path, hand to hand, I was able to smoke him with my Black Scar and Earth spell. After the fight, the fallen soldier said a few things - I know not what. I've found a new area, this being the 3rd. I'm labeling areas in accordance to maps. Found maps actually cover multiple areas, but the new area not found on a map, I lump together as a whole myself). The puzzles are turning into very interesting mini games! Some take a couple seconds, others a couple minutes.... I'm still trying to figure out this one. I found a switch that disables all the green spears from the ground in the watery catacombs area! That will open the area up more so I don't have to take all these detours! (and will save me a lot of time going from the surface to the newer areas in the game) Anyway, a black shield in this new area led to a little boss fight with a, well, he looked like that white monster with horns at the beginning of Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back with a nice bolder sized morning star. I killed this creature, but one hit from him (blocked even!) knocked off 286 HP. Yikes.... That's over half my life at Level 44! I found a map to this new area on a dead body already..... Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

Note to self.
Examine ALL stats before pawning old equipment. I got a great shield with all improved stats from the last one. I thought COOL! - Equipped it, sold the old one and saved. I failed to notice the new shield was cursed, while the shield's stats were better than my previous shield, the cursed status cut my attack, defense and magic character stats in half! ....needless to say I ended up buying my old shield back. (which is awesome that I have the option to buy back anything I sell to the shop keep) With cursed stuff fetching a decent price, I only lost 2000G out of the deal. I think the lesson I learned was worth every coin of that. Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

Some of the monsters in this area are rather frightening! One in particular, a very large black long haired gargoyle with a purple glowing hand. The fights
with them don't last long with my more powerful attack spells in the equation, but if I do get hit, its quite painful.
I'm definitely better off throwing everything at them I have before I do get hit - I'd probably expend just as much magic healing myself as I would throwing high end attack spells into the equation. My exploratory skills have rewarded me with the Bless spell! Earth heal costs 5MP and heals 70HP. Bless costs 12MP and heals 300HP. ^_^ I think I'll stick with the better deal! I found a sword that looks like the Scorpion from TAC. (or at least what I remember the scorpion sword looking like) I did a test, and it doesn't poison me. It has higher stats as a rapier than my water based sword - so I parted with that sword. The shop keep got some dragon crystals in his inventory. I currently have 3 of them I've found (heh, and bought back a couple times too) and he got 4 more in himself. I'm thinking hard times might be ahead.... For the time being, at Level 45, I am not just surviving, I'm thriving! Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

I figured out a correlation between shooting an arrow through these blade obstacles to hit an eye and bridges.
Bridges have a room close to them that has all these revolving blades, and an eye on the wall to shoot with an arrow. Until the eye is shot, bridges collapse beneath the player, causing instant death. Some of these enemies are starting to get nasty. I've fun into a weaker pallet swap of that mage skeleton boss from a while back. Traps are starting to get interesting as well. Found an interesting looking "pillar" - oh wow that's nice. Turns out I didn't figure out it was a room sized cannon until I took a cannon ball to the side of the head. Several times actually, to my instant death. They're arranged in a semi-challenging manner with rotation switches on certain walls. Fun! I found a rather strong water/ice based attack spell. Cool. It works really well on some of these fire based demons. Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.
